figurante – Tomoko Mukaiyama’s New Installation Performance at Warehouse TERRADA -The Tokyo Gendai VIP Program performance tickets are currently on limited sale to the general public-

This performance will be part of the TENNOZ ART WEEK programs in collaboration with the Tokyo Gendai international art fair. The performance is aimed at VIPs from all over the world, such as art professionals and collectors, but a limited number of tickets are currently on sale to the general public.

As an official fair partner of Tokyo Gendai, we will be hosting TENNOZ ART WEEK, a collaboration project taking place at Tennoz. By inviting overseas collectors visiting Tokyo Gendai to also come to Tennoz, we aim to connect the Japanese art scene with the art scenes overseas while invigorating the art market and breathing new life into the city.

The main program of TENNOZ ART WEEK will consist of a new installation performance by Tomoko Mukaiyama, a pianist and artist active in various disciplines, including music, art, fashion, dance, architecture, and film.

There will be no stage or spectator seating in the approximately 500 ㎡ warehouse space where the performance will be held. Entitled figurante (meaning ‘extra’ or ‘small role without speaking’), it will invite the audience into a space in which it’s unclear where the stage starts and ends and where the boundary between the audience and the performer gradually breaks down over time. The floor and walls of the austere concrete warehouse will be covered with plants and natural materials, revitalizing it as a space that grapples with the vivid cycles of life.

Tomoko Mukaiyama’s new installation performance, which alludes to the state of the world, environmental issues, natural disasters, and what time is left, inspires us with a sense of awe and respect for nature. Now that international travel has recovered, the ability to experience the piece together with various people takes on a profound new meaning.

Warehouse TERRADA will continue to invite artists around the world to promote international cultural tourism, with Tennoz as a waypoint connecting Japan with the international art scene.

[Statement]

Mukaiyama has expanded her expression through a series of collaborations with renowned artists, experimenting and challenging herself. Her inspiration has always had womanhood at its core, and her creations, resonating with the dynamism of nature and accepting people’s pain and feelings, fascinate the audience and draw them into the contemplation.

Through COVID-19, the anthropocentric view of the world began to unravel in human consciousness, and people and society gained ground for the idea that this could be a last chance to restore the relationship between nature and humanity. This phenomenon largely influenced the creation of figurante.

We see signs of a shift in values towards the new era and a deepening awareness of each person’s proactive involvement in nature and the planet. This suggests a transition from an era of “something (or someone)” leading the world to one in which individual engagement matters more. The work challenges the audience to confront the present and to imagine the future. Welcome to figurante, you are a part of the creation.

[Message from the Artist]

While your shadow becomes a part of “figurante”, it draws to your memory.

Tomoko Mukaiyama

[About Tomoko Mukaiyama]

Tomoko Mukaiyama is a Dutch-Japanese pianist, visual artist and director based in Amsterdam. In 1991 she was the first Japanese pianist to win the prestigious Dutch Gaudeamus competition and in 1993 she won the Muramatsu Prize in Japan, which is awarded to an outstanding musician.

She has been engaged by many prestigious orchestras and ensembles throughout the world, like the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, the London Sinfonietta and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among many others. Tomoko pushes on the boundaries of the classical music world; she has a fascination for offbeat contemporary art projects and plays with the conventions around her instrument, her profession and its performance. Tomoko uses her experience as a concert pianist to bring new dimensions to the concert space – as a multi-modal artist she develops performing arts projects and art installations, that combine music with modern dance, fashion and visual art. In 2007, Tomoko Mukaiyama Foundation was founded in the Netherlands and in 2015, multus was founded in Japan with the objective to produce new pieces. The foundation and the association aim to produce novel collaborations that are inspired by Mukaiyama’s artistic vision of intertwining different contemporary art and music forms.
